MCC L5 – Reflection Playbook (13 Z Areas)
Introduction & Background
At MCC (Master Certified Coach) level, coaching is a precision partnership. Presence, reflection, and neutrality are seamless. The work is not technique-forward; it is identity-forward and awareness-led.
Coaching at this level is discovery plus for the coachee. "Cover" keeps something closed, unseen, or unexamined. Discovery opens the eyes; what was hidden becomes visible. The plus in coaching is enabling the coachee to actively remove the cover that blocks their own discoveries—without the coach supplying content, judgement, or direction.
Linkage to ICF Core Competencies
- Foundation: ethical grounding and full presence anchor neutrality and trust of the coachee's authorship.
- Co-Creating the Relationship: trust and co-agreements are responsive, shared, and identity-aware.
- Communicating Effectively: listening beneath words (non-verbal, structural, unspoken) and reflecting with precision.
- Cultivating Learning & Growth: awareness turns into self-owned insight, decisions, and sustainable momentum.
Reflection Types & Desired Impacts
Reflection Type | MCC-Level Character | Desired Coachee Impact |
---|---|---|
Meta-Pattern (content-free) | Surfaces the underlying structure of thought without touching story content; invites systemic self-awareness. | See operating patterns; shift from content to mechanism; choose differently. |
MCC Character | Neutral, precise, identity-forward reflection; shows the "who" (stance/operating mode) with clarity. | AHA moment on identity/stance; self-recognition; self-authored movement. |
Metaphor | Symbolic image cuts through noise; engages imagination and emotion for deep insight. | New associations; fresh pathways; memorable insight that sticks and scales. |
Target impacts overall: heightened self-awareness; proactive agency; breakthrough insight; self-owned next steps; sustained growth.
Master Table – 13 Z Areas (MCC L5)
Use one reflection per beat. Stay neutral. Hold silence. Then, if needed, a tight What/How inquiry. No judgement.
Z Area | Example Coachee Statement | L5 Reflection — Meta-Pattern (content-free) | L5 Reflection — MCC Character | L5 Reflection — Metaphor | Quick Indicators (precision) | Coaching Moves (Pause / Probe / Identity) |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1) Ambiguity | "I want to start, but the timing isn't right." | Starting is contingent on a prior, undefined condition. | Time is held as the gate for movement. | Waiting for a green light on a road that may not have one. | • "Not yet / not ready" with no criteria • Conditional phrasing without thresholds ("when it feels right") • Repeated deferral to vague future |
• Pause: after "isn't right" • Probe: What are the explicit criteria for "right"? • Identity: How do you relate to action when conditions are undefined? |
2) Contradiction | "I trust my team, yet I review everything." | Opposite directions operate simultaneously in execution. | Trust and checking travel together here. | Kite flying while the string is gripped tight. | • "I trust... but I still..." in one breath • Delegation + micro-control pairing • Justifications for mutually exclusive stances |
• Pause: after "yet" • Probe: What makes both necessary at once? • Identity: Who are you when you hold both simultaneously? |
3) Silence | (Long pause when naming a personal target) | A quiet space appears when this area is named. | A pause shows up at this point. | A blank page in a book full of text. | • Sudden hush; breath/tempo shift • Eyes avert; micro-freeze • Topic skimmed then dropped |
• Pause: extend 3–5s • Probe: What’s present in that pause? • Identity: What does this silence point to about what matters? |
4) Avoidance | "Let's park that conflict for later." | This area is moved to another time point. | The conversation shifts away from this spot. | A box placed in the corner and covered. | • Deflect/park language ("later", "another time") • Abrupt topic hop when discomfort appears • Humor/banter used to dodge depth |
• Pause: after "later" • Probe: What makes "later" useful now? • Identity: How do you see yourself when deferring certain topics? |
5) Over-justification | "It's right because A, B, C, D..." | Many reasons cluster around a single choice. | Explanations wrap tightly around this decision. | A gift wrapped in many layers of paper. | • Stacked reasons beyond necessity • Defensive tone for simple moves • Repetition of the same rationale in variants |
• Pause: when reasons start piling • Probe: Which single reason truly moves you? • Identity: Who are you without the extra explanations? |
6) Inconsistency | "I planned last week; I haven't started." | A gap appears between earlier statement and now. | Past statement and present action aren't aligned. | Map and journey not matching. | • Prior commitment vs current behavior • "I meant to..." followed by stall • Recalibration excuses without ownership |
• Pause: after naming the mismatch • Probe: What decides which promise you honor today? • Identity: How do you define integrity in this context? |
7) Missing Piece | "That's everything." (yet a key element is absent) | Part of the picture hasn't appeared yet. | The description feels not yet complete. | A puzzle with one piece not placed. | • Obvious gap (missing stakeholder, constraint, risk) • Vague reference ("someone", "stuff happened") • Avoids naming the decisive element |
• Pause: after "that's everything" • Probe: What, if present, would make this whole? • Identity: What do you notice when a piece sits outside? |
8) Emotional Leak | "That project... anyway." (tone dips) | A tone change shows up when this enters. | Your tone shifts at this point. | A minor chord entering a major song. | • Micro-sigh, pace drop, softer volume • Brevity then clamp ("...anyway") • Quick humor to exit the feeling |
• Pause: right after the dip • Probe: What moves in you here? • Identity: How do you want to meet yourself here? |
9) Pattern Loop | "I tried that many times. Same result." | The same approach appears across attempts. | The same method shows up again here. | The same track repeating on a playlist. | • "Always/never" phrasing • Strategy reused despite evidence • Comfort pattern defended as "the way" |
• Pause: after "same approach" • Probe: What rule is running that choice? • Identity: Who are you when you choose outside that rule? |
10) Value Clash | "Family time matters, yet I keep taking overtime." | Two valued directions pull apart here. | Your stated value and your choice travel different lines. | Two rails slowly diverging. | • Value declaration vs recurring choice • Rationalizations of trade-off as "temporary" • Emotional residue (guilt/pride mix) |
• Pause: after naming both lines • Probe: What standard decides in the moment? • Identity: What identity honors both in a way you respect? |
11) Future Fog | "Next year I'll be successful." | The future image is not yet defined. | The picture lacks concrete markers. | An outline drawing not yet colored. | • Generic future claim with no signals • No criteria, no witness, no timeframe • Inflated aspiration with thin texture |
• Pause: after "not yet defined" • Probe: What signals tell you it's true? • Identity: Who are you when those signals are true today? |
12) Over-certainty | "This will definitely fail." | The outcome is held as decided before events. | The result is treated as already final. | Closing the book before reading. | • Absolutes: definitely/always/never • Zero counter-hypothesis allowed • Past failure projected as law |
• Pause: after the absolute • Probe: What makes that conclusion necessary? • Identity: How do you relate to uncertainty when choosing? |
13) Under-ownership | "If my boss approves, I'll move." | Movement depends on an external lever. | The lever for action sits outside you. | A car waiting to be pushed to move. | • External locus phrases ("if they... I will...") • Progress defined by gatekeepers • Low agency verbs; waiting posture |
• Pause: after naming the external lever • Probe: What's within your jurisdiction right now? • Identity: Who are you when authorship sits with you? |
Combination Patterns Reference (High-Frequency Pairs)
Use this when a single Z Area lens feels incomplete. Spot the combo, reflect at meta-level (content-free), then pause.
Combo | Example Coachee Statement | Signal Why It's a Combo | Risk for Coach | One L5 Reflection Strategy (content-free) |
---|---|---|---|---|
Ambiguity + Under-ownership | "If the market clears up and my boss signs off, I'll launch." | Vague condition + external gatekeeper define movement. | Chasing external factors; misses agency. | "The next step is tied to conditions and approvals that sit outside you." |
Ambiguity + Over-justification | "Not the right time—because A, B, C, and a few other things." | Undefined "right time" + stacked reasons to delay. | Debating reasons instead of clarifying criteria. | "Timing is held as uncertain, supported by many reasons around one pause." |
Contradiction + Pattern Loop | "I empower them, but I always step in at the end." | Opposing stances repeat across cycles ("always"). | Treating it as a one-off conflict, missing repetition rule. | "Two opposite moves keep appearing in the same sequence." |
Contradiction + Over-certainty | "I trust them, but if I don't check, things will definitely fail." | Opposition justified by absolute future claim. | Arguing predictions instead of exploring stance. | "Trust and control sit together, anchored by a fixed outcome assumption." |
Silence + Missing Piece | (Long pause) "That's all." | Notable pause where a key element should be named. | Moving on without surfacing the absent part. | "There's a quiet space and a part that hasn't shown up yet." |
Avoidance + Emotional Leak | "That issue... anyway, later." (voice dips) | Deflection coincides with tone drop. | Chasing content while the affect remains unworked. | "As this emerges, the tone shifts and the conversation moves away." |
Over-justification + Value Clash | "I have to take this; it's for the team... and also for my family goals." | Many reasons used to rationalize conflicting values. | Helping justify instead of surfacing the clash standard. | "Multiple reasons cluster while two valued directions pull apart." |
Inconsistency + Over-justification | "I planned it; I didn't start—because of five valid reasons." | Action–intent gap wrapped in abundant rationale. | Debating reasons, ignoring choice mechanism. | "There's a gap between intent and action, surrounded by many explanations." |
Future Fog + Under-ownership | "Next year I'll be successful—if leadership gives me a shot." | Vague future + progress tied to others' permission. | Over-focusing on access, not authorship. | "The future picture is undefined and linked to an external lever." |
Future Fog + Ambiguity | "Soon I'll scale—when things are ready." | Undefined future + undefined readiness criteria. | Planning tasks instead of defining signals. | "The desired future and what 'ready' means aren't defined yet." |
Value Clash + Under-ownership | "Family matters... but my schedule is set by clients." | Value declared + agency ceded to external actors. | Co-signing the external control narrative. | "What you value and what moves are governed outside you." |
Pattern Loop + Over-certainty | "We've tried; it never works—this always fails." | Repetition language + absolute outcome claim. | Arguing probability instead of noticing rule-based choice. | "The same approach is repeated and the outcome is held as fixed." |
Emotional Leak + Value Clash | "That promotion... anyway, my kids—yeah." (voice tight) | Affect spike + pull between ambition and family. | Following the story, missing the identity tension. | "Emotion bumps as two valued directions pull in different ways." |
Use flow: spot single Z → check for combo → deliver one meta reflection → silence → if needed, one tight What/How inquiry.
